LANSING — The City of Perry has declared a state of emergency due to what city officials deemed a tornado.
Several people had posted videos and pictures on social media of a funnel cloud spotted near the city earlier Friday evening.
In a Facebook post at 9:35 p.m., the city asked residents to limit sewer usage due to the strain on pumping stations and to stay home and off the streets.
“A state of emergency is declared for the City of Perry due to a tornado strike,” the statement said. “Many downed power lines and dangerous conditions. Please remain off the streets. STAY HOME AND STAY SAFE. We have no reports of injuries at this time. Emergency personnel are on scene. More information will be provided when it is available.”
Consumers Energy’s online outage map showed 674 customers were without power in and around the city, all south of Interstate 69.
The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning earlier Friday evening that expired about 8:45 p.m.
