Steven Gerrard ‘flies to Istanbul to hold talks about becoming the next Trabzonspor manager’

Steven Gerrard could be set to become the new manager of Turkish side Trabzospor after reports suggest he had ‘flown to Istanbul to hold talks’ with representatives from the club.

The Liverpool legend has been spending some time away from management, after he was sacked by Aston Villa back in October, following a poor run of league form that saw his side win just two of their opening 11 league matches this season.  

But according to Turkish news outlet Karar, the 42-year-old, who has now managed in the Scottish Premiership and the Premier League, flew to Turkey to have dinner with the club’s current Vice President, Ertugrul Dogan.

The Turkish champions are set to elect a new president later this March, a position which Dogan is running for, with the reports from Karar suggesting that if he does become president, it is ‘considered certain that he will entrust the team to the English coach.’

And as Dogan stands as a favourite to win the election, there is a large chance the former Rangers boss could be offered the job.

The club, who sit sixth in the Turkish Super Lig, are in the market for a new manager after their previous boss Abdullah Avcı quit, following a 2-1 defeat to bottom side Umraniyespor last week. 

Despite losing their last two league games, Trabzonspor are only five points adrift from third place and have won 11 of their 23 league matches this season. 

Whether Gerrard will take up that offer is another question, with the former Rangers boss also having recently been backed to take over as the manager of the Polish national side.

He achieved success at Rangers winning the Scottish Premiership with the club in 2022

The former England midfielder started his coaching career as the boss of Liverpool’s U18s, working within their youth set up before departing in 2018 to the Scottish Premiership where he succeded Dean Smith. 

He would go on to stay in Glasgow for several years, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021 without losing a single game, before taking up the vacant role at Villa park alongside his assistant Gary McAllister.

But he managed just under two seasons at the Premier League side, with Villa dropping to 17th in the table after conceding six of their opening 11 matches. 

Since then some, including Jurgen Klopp, have tipped Gerrard to bounce back, and it appears it may not be too long before we see him back in management.
