Sir Billy Connolly has claimed his childhood was ‘hell’ since he was ‘preyed upon’ by his own family members and ‘psychopath’ teachers.

The comedian, 80, has previously revealed he was abandoned by his mother Mary at just four years old and that his father William sexually abused him for five years from the age of ten.

He has previously detailed being beaten by his aunt Mona and being the victim of sadistic school teachers.

Sir Billy had therapy in an attempt to get over his experiences and wrestled with his conscience over bringing them out into the open at the age of 59.

In the series two premiere of Gold’s Billy Connolly Does… the funnyman said: ‘My life at home was hell. There was awful things going on.

‘I was being preyed upon and my aunt was a nightmare. If I went home from school, she’d be there. I couldn’t sit and do my homework with her roaming about.

‘At six years old, I learnt a thwack on the hand or even a smack in the mouth is overrated as a pain creator – it’s not the worst thing you’re ever going to feel.

‘My aunties could f**king inflict twice the pain without lifting their hands – by humiliation. All the time: “Stupid. You’re thick, you’re stupid.” To humiliate someone is a desperately bad and wrong thing; it’s worse than hitting somebody.

‘Humiliation is for ever. It takes you so long to get over it; it takes your whole life. School was very violent indeed. I had a psychopath called Miss McDonald – Rosie McDonald. Big Rosie, they called her, as if she deserved affection.

‘Her specialty was placing pencils under your knuckles, between your knuckles and the desk, so as to induce extra pain when she whacked you.

‘She would thrash me for nothing, for showing interest in pigeons outside the window, for glancing away when she was talking. She was a sadistic b*****d.’

Sir Billy previously admitted he has never had an ‘I’ve made it’ moment, despite enjoying a career in comedy lasting nearly 60 years.

The stand-up performer, who believes nobody is ever ‘quite there’, said he doubted himself because of his ‘family situation’ during his childhood in Glasgow.

The actor told The Mirror: ‘I’ve never considered myself having made it. You’re never quite there. It’s like [being] rich. I grew up in such doubt of myself with my family situation. It never really goes away.’

Billy was brought up by the alcoholic RAF technician, who died in 1989, and aunts after his mother Mary walked out on her family when he was three.

The BAFTA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient told the publication: ‘Making it is a myth. Fame is a kind of myth, too. When you speak to people who have fame it never struck them as what they imagined it to be.’

He went on to admit that, despite not having a defining mark, he’s had ‘lot’s of moments like walking on stage at the [Royal] Albert Hall’, which was ‘extraordinary’.
