Crews are searching for possible victims after an avalanche occurred at the Palisades Tahoe Resort during Wednesday’s winter storm. The avalanche happened around 9:30 a.m. on the Palisades side of the Lake Tahoe ski resort, above the GS gully area of KT-22. Palisades Tahoe said patrol and operations teams are performing a search for anyone impacted. It’s unclear how many people that could be. CNN reported, citing a Cal Fire captain, that Cal Fire teams responded to reports of “multiple people trapped.” The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is also responding. A spokesperson told The Associated Press there were “no confirmed reports” of people trapped.Palisades Tahoe said both sides of the mountain will be closed for the day. Meteorologist Heather Waldman reports that the avalanche comes after the resort recorded 9 inches of snowfall on Jan. 3. More recently, 17 inches fell on Jan. 7. Another 16-20 inches are forecast for Wednesday. In between the recent rounds of snow, there have been breaks that allowed for melting. Another avalanche risk factor was strong winds over the weekend. The Sierra Avalanche Center has forecast a considerable avalanche danger on Wednesday.This story is developing.
