“No person other than a law enforcement officer or licensed security officer shall possess a firearm either openly or concealed,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said as she activated that emergency order Friday. It means anyone in Albuquerque and the surrounding county who owns a gun can’t have one in public for the next month. Grisham is taking action after an 11-year-old boy was killed Wednesday night.”If that mandate had been in effect when we were there, Lynne and I would be dead, simply dead,” Chuck de Caro said, reflecting on a life-threatening incident that happened to him and his wife Lynne Russell. They both believe this order to suspend Second Amendment rights could cause problems for public safety rather than aid it. A few years ago, during a road trip, the two were held at gunpoint in Albuquerque. Russell says if it weren’t for them having their firearms and Charles being able to protect himself and Lynne — they don’t believe they would be here today. When Russell first heard about the order, her response was, “Is this woman f—— crazy? Because this is wrong every way you look at it.”Grisham argued that this choice comes down to how many children are being killed in the state.”Gun deaths are the leading cause of death for children 1 to 19 in New Mexico,” Grisham said.
