One person was killed, and 19 other victims were being treated at Boston-area hospitals after an SUV crashed into the Apple store at the Hingham Derby Street Shops just before 11 a.m. on Monday.Video from Sky 5 showed a large hole in the glass front of the store. Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said a criminal investigation was underway.”This morning was an unthinkable morning, and people are trying to get through it and process what happened,” Cruz said. “This investigation is active and ongoing.”The store opened at 10 a.m. on Monday, and the crash happened less than an hour after it opened.Cruz said it wasn’t clear how many people were inside the store at the time.”Really… absolute unthinkable event that occurred at that store when you’re just going there to buy a phone or get something fixed or whatever it may be, it’s absolutely unthinkable,” Cruz said.A tow truck removed the SUV from the store just after 3 p.m. Monday. In a statement, Apple said the victim that was killed was a construction worker. “We are devastated by the shocking events at Apple Derby Street today and the tragic loss of a professional who was onsite supporting recent construction at the store,” Apple said in a written statement. “Our hearts go out to our team members and customers who were injured and all of those who were affected by this terrible incident.”South Shore Health said they were treating 17 patients for injuries ranging from head trauma to limb injuries.”We have multiple patients with life-threatening injuries,” Dr. Christopher Burns, chief of trauma for South Shore Health, said. “We have patients in the operating room and people we anticipate going into the operating room.”Two additional patients were transported to Boston area hospitals, authorities said. Crime tape blocked off a large area of the parking lot surrounding the Apple store. A witness said the driver appeared to be injured, but alert, following the crash. Cruz said his understanding was the driver had not been taken to the hospital.”He, right now, is with police officers,” Cruz said.Cruz said investigators were also looking into whether the driver was treated for any medical issues.Frank O’Brien, who was shopping at Derby Street at the time, told the Patriot Ledger he wondered how fast a car would have to go to bust through the glass in front of the store.”You’d have to really be picking up speed to end up in the storage area at the back side of the Apple store,” he said.One person who was inside the store at the time of the crash said the SUV appeared to be moving at a high rate of speed when it crashed into the store.”It was like a big explosion,” another witness, who was outside, said. “It was so loud.”Cruz would only say that the SUV was traveling at an undetermined speed when it crashed into the store. “There’s an active investigation going on,” Cruz said. “Regarding the operator of the motor vehicle, we’re looking into that,” Cruz said. “Regarding the status of the motor vehicle, we’re looking into that. Obviously, we’re going to get the information we can and go forward.”One woman, whose 32-year-old son was at the Hingham Apple store, was outside the South Shore Hospital, desperate to find out information about him. She told WCVB’s Peter Eliopoulos she had been unable to reach him since the crash.Derby Street Shops at 92-98 Derby St. in Hingham, are a collection of 64 stores and restaurants. The 4,000-square-foot Apple store is located in the rear of the outdoor shopping plaza, next to Burton’s Grill. It opened in 2006.
