Fans can tell a lot about an anime character from the way they dress. Fashion allows anyone to express themselves any way they’d like, and anime characters often convey their personalities to the audience through their attire. Most anime characters are pretty fashion-forward, and their iconic looks make them stand out in the best way. However, not all characters are nicely dressed.
Some anime characters even have some of the worst fashion sense imaginable. Whether they’re trying to be as unique as possible or they simply just don’t care about looks, many characters have committed some heinous fashion crimes over the years and become infamous for their disastrous outfits.
10 Haruhi Doesn’t Care About Fashion Much
Ouran High School Host Club
With all her iconic looks throughout the series, it almost feels wrong to call Haruhi Fujioka poorly dressed. However, fans shouldn’t forget her introduction in the first episode of Ouran High School Host Club. She appears before the boys looking completely disheveled, to the point where they initially mistake her for a boy herself.
Haruhi has no time or patience for fashion, with her focus completely on her studies instead. As a result, she leaves outfit picking to the hosts and her dad, which is really the only reason she looks so cute most of the time. If it were up to her, she’d probably still be wearing that awful sweater from the beginning.
9 Karamatsu Is The Flashiest Of The Matsunos
None of the Matsuno brothers in Osomatsu-san are exactly fashion icons, but some of them at least have a little style. Karamatsu, on the other hand, is likely the worst offender of the sextuplets. His sense of style is nothing short of gaudy, filled with flashy fabrics, sequins, and ridiculous sunglasses.
Karamatsu wants to stand out above all else, and he does exactly that, for better or worse. His fashion choices are so bad that even his brothers call him out on them. At the very least, it makes him easy to pick out among his brothers and gives him some individuality.
8 Joe Kido Has The Classic Nerd Look Down
Plenty of characters in the Digimon franchise need a little help when it comes to style, but few even come close to Joe’s level of fashion disaster. With his thick-rimmed glasses, big shorts, knee-high socks, and sweater vest, he’s got that stereotypical nerd aesthetic everyone always sees in shows and movies.
While it’s true Joe is the nerdy guy of the group, he doesn’t have to own it so much. Luckily, he seems to grow into this look as he ages, and once he’s an adult, it actually suits him.
7 L Is One Of The Sloppiest Looking Detectives Ever
There’s no denying that fans love Death Note‘s mysterious and eccentric detective, L. While he may be a fan-favorite, he doesn’t exactly look the part. With his slouched posture and messy attire, it’s almost impossible to take him seriously at first.
L looks like anything but a world-famous detective. However, this sloppiness tends to grow on viewers, becoming another lovably weird part of his character. L may be messy and strange, but that’s part of his appeal. Nevertheless, he’s definitely not winning any beauty pageants with that look.
6 Every Character Rocks A Crazy Tacky Style
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Most anime series have that one character who dresses in completely wild clothing, but Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure takes it to the next level. Pretty much every single character has a crazy fashion sense, sporting some of the most mind-boggling styles in all of anime.
While many of the looks in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure are nothing short of tacky or foppish, most of the crew can pull them off somehow. Nevertheless, there are still a few outfits that just take it too far and look silly, even for a Jojo’s character.
5 Tsukimi’s True Beauty Is Hidden Under Her Bad Fashion
Just about the entire main cast of Princess Jellyfish is lacking in the style department, but the most prominent offender is the series protagonist, Tsukimi Kurashita. Tsukimi is awkward and scared of coming out of her shell. As a result, she hides her natural beauty under ugly sweatsuits and baggy outfits.
Thankfully, Tsukimi’s style gets a major upgrade after she meets Kuranosuke Koibuchi. With his help and her natural knack for fashion design, she slowly starts to open up and allow herself to be the pretty princess she truly is.
4 Hifumi Yamada Is One Of The Worst Dressed Students Of Hope’s Peak
There are a lot of ridiculously dressed characters in the Danganronpa franchise, but Hifumi Yamada undoubtedly takes the cake. His appearance alone is odd enough, so his outfit really does him no favors. He’s another character with the classic dork look, with his tucked-in button-up shirt, comically large tie, and needlessly tight pants.
To top it all off, Hifume’s got one of the strangest hairstyles out of the original students as well, slicking it up into a perfect point on the top of his head. Put it all together, and it makes for one of the silliest outfits in the series, making it next to impossible to take Hifumi seriously, even in the most crucial moments.
3 Rock Lee & Might Guy Sport Matching Green Jumpsuits
It’s no secret that some of the ninja attire in Naruto is a little out there, but none are quite as bizarre as Rock Lee and Might Guy’s skin-tight, green jumpsuits. Admittedly, it’s become an iconic look throughout the franchise, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s one of the weirdest fashion choices of the series.
Even other Naruto characters have pointed out the ridiculousness of their fashion, often placing the duo into a more comical role by comparison. However, that doesn’t get these two down, and they wear their suits with pride no matter what. Despite the odd looks they get from others, it’s commendable that they can be so authentically themselves and a testament to their inner strength.
2 Mamoru Has Some Infamously Bad Outfits, Even By ’90s Standards
The ’90s Sailor Moon anime is full of iconic looks from the girls, each perfectly capturing their individual sense of style. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Mamoru Chiba. Throughout the years, he’s become notorious among fans for his horrendous sense of fashion.
Mamoru’s goofy looks are so bad they’ve even become a meme over time. Even the girls point out in the anime that Mamoru’s attire leaves something to be desired. The only time he’s even the least bit fashionable is when he transforms into Tuxedo Mask, so that says a lot about his personal everyday style.
1 Tsunagu’s Hero Costume Is Laughably Absurd
My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia is filled with many colorful heroes, all decked out in the craziest costumes imaginable. However, few are quite as crazy as the hero costume of Tsunagu Hakamada, otherwise known as Best Jeanist. In battle, he wears denim jeans from head to toe, complete with a high collar that covers most of his face.
Tsunagu’s outfit is one of the silliest costumes in the entire series and in no way gives him the vibe of a hero. However, given his quirk, this strange outfit does make a lot of sense, and it works well with his powers. It’s just a shame it doesn’t look more heroic.
